Keeping on top of social media updates can feel like a losing battle. Just as you get your head around one change, there’s a new feature you need to start using. And so the cycle continues!

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are changing daily, but not all of these updates are relevant for the average user or business. To help you more easily find the information you’re actually looking for, our social media marketing experts have put together this guide with everything you need to know about recent updates.

5 Social Media Updates You Need to Know About

New Features on Edits by Meta

Officially launched at the end of March, Edits is a huge new competitor for content editing app CapCut. Designed by Meta, Edits provides creators with a robust suite of tools for crafting high-quality videos. Including features like AI powered animations and green screen capabilities, the app integrates seamlessly with Instagram.

Over the last week or so, Edits have continued to add new features to the app to enhance the user experience. These include new fonts and voice effects, as well as easier editing options. We can’t wait to see the app continue to evolve!

TikTok Introduces Reviews

If you haven’t already realised, TikTok have an incredible search function. Moreover, it’s no secret that people are turning to social media and AI platforms over traditional search engines like Google. Recognising this shift in consumer behaviour, TikTok has recently introduced a review function for some locations and attractions. As one of the most recent social media updates, this new feature allows users to get all the information they need in one place, without having to leave the app.

It’s a smart play from TikTok if you ask us!

Instagram Adds ‘Lockable’ Reels

Lockable Reels on Instagram were in testing last month and after a successful trial, they seem to be rolling the feature out to more users. It does what it says on the tin really – it allows users to ‘lock’ certain Reels which can only be accessed via a code.

Similar to creating a ‘Close Friends’ story, this new feature is said to help users manage their privacy on the platform. Further down the line, it may even mean that creators and businesses are able to monetise their content.

Video Content Not Performing on Threads

For years now, we’ve been told that video content is what the social media platforms (and our audiences) want to see from us. The rise of TikTok and the introduction of Reels are evidence of this. With Threads, however, it appears that the algorithm is favouring a different type of post.

Threads was launched as a companion to Instagram, but with a distinct focus. Rather than being entertainment-driven, Threads prioritises content that encourages conversation and shares different perspectives, according to Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram).

So, if you’re incorporating Threads into your marketing strategy, consider adjusting your tone and style. Focus on more conversational, thought-provoking posts that invite engagement.

The Death of Hashtags

Ok, so that subheading is a little on the dramatic side we admit. Nevertheless, there has been conversation for some time now about hashtags being on their way out – and it seems to be the case!

It’s no secret that society has become increasingly dependent on AI, and social media algorithms are no exception. Instagram and TikTok now use computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) to determine what a post is about, without needing to rely on user-added indicators (such as hashtags).

This being said, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t still some value in including a small selection of keywords in your content. Previously, it was best practise to use 20-30 hashtags within your Instagram posts. Now, we’d recommend limiting this to 3-5 super relevant tags. Too many tags now can make your content look cluttered or spammy.
